Five Tips for Glowing Skin

Naturally glowing skin always seems to top the list when it comes to skincare goals. Here at Living Nature, we have our general rule of thumb tips which include ensuring you remove all traces of makeup, exfoliating and eating a healthy balanced diet and drinking plenty of water, but we wanted to explain a little further why the above tips and more are essential.

Here are some of our top 5 tips to achieving glowing skin.

  1. A healthy diet, enough sleep and a stress-less lifestyle approach are all factors which will lead to healthy glowing skin. When we eat foods that are heavily processed, consume too much alcohol, overwork and binge watch TV series until midnight, we become stressed, tired and undernourished.

As you age, your skin’s connective tissue reduces and leads to a reduction in elasticity and strength - say hello to wrinkles! The effects of ageing combined with lack of sleep can lead to skin looking even more dull and drab. While we sleep, your body boosts blood flow to your skin to aid in skin regeneration and rejuvenation, yet when we have less sleep it causes a decrease in blood flow which leads to skin looking dull. Busy social calendars, parenting, and not switching off from work are all culprits when it comes to lack of sleep, and we encourage you to make sleep a priority for your skin’s health and overall wellbeing.

Tip: Avoid sleeping on your stomach with your face smooshed into the pillow as this can cause wrinkles to appear over time.

Stress has a similar outcome, but it can also lead to eczema, psoriasis and acne. Stress can lead to a hormonal imbalance and cause you to release cortisol, which is the natural enemy of collagen and leads to a breakdown of connective tissues. Try to live a stress-less life style, set yourself achievable goals at work and at home, and remember to live in the moment. Also try to surround yourself with positive, glass-is-always-full people.

Alcohol, caffeine and processed foods or foods that are full of ‘empty’ calories can deplete the body of essential nutrients required for it to function properly. Remember to drink plenty of water to flush out excess toxins before they create a hormonal imbalance, which leads to your skin being the first to suffer.  This means swapping the potato chips for celery sticks.

  2. Once we have the insides sorted and start to make healthier lifestyle choices, we need to address what we apply to our skin. Our skin is our largest organ and protects our insides, and we need to take steps to nourish and care for our outer shell. On average women apply 168 chemicals to their body everyday, and if we are not cleaning off these products accordingly then these products build up in excess amounts.

Ensuring you clean your face properly morning and night is a daily must, especially if you wear makeup. Even when it looks as though we have removed our makeup, it is not always the case; there may still be a thin layer or build up around the ears and neck.

Take your time when cleansing your face; be conscious of every part of your face and neck, and gently cleanse twice if needed. We only suggest double cleansing with a natural cleanser which will not strip your skin of its essential oils, but rather nourishes your skin while it cleanses. Cleansing your face morning and night will leave you with healthy glowing skin. View Living Nature’s certified natural cleansers here

Tip: Use non-comedogenic natural cosmetics which are formulated with ingredients that do not clog pores, as this can lead to acne.

  3. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate. Our skin is constantly changing and regenerating itself and everyone has dead skin cells that need exfoliating away. Dead skin cells need to be exfoliated away to avoid clogged pores and encourage new cells to grow which in turn gives you healthy glowing skin. We suggest including a skin exfoliating regime 2-3 times a week for your entire body.

Living Nature’s certified natural Skin Revive Exfoliant is a granule exfoliator, which combines natural microbeads with natural cleansing ingredients enhancing the exfoliating process, with no harsh abrasive action.

Tip: Living Nature Skin Revive Exfoliate is formulated with 100% natural jojoba and calendula wax microbeads which are biodegradable and harmless to ocean life.

  4. It is important to ensure you hydrate your body internally and externally. Dehydrated skin looks dull and tired, it is very common and you may be unaware that your skin is lacking enough hydration. Topically apply hydrating natural products are a fantastic way to hydrate your skin quicker than just upping your water intake. They help to restore your skin’s pH level, retain water, calm the skin and help to make your skin glow.

Living Nature’s Hydrating Toning Gel, Extra Hydrating Toning Gel and Hydrating Gel Mask are all incredibly hydrating natural products; they contain no alcohol and don't have harsh drying effects. Instead they  utilise the unique skin toning, soothing, hydrating and restorative properties of Harakeke (NZ Flax Gel) plus the antimicrobial and healing effect of Active Manuka Honey - one of nature's miracle ingredients and a natural humectant.

“I never realised I had dehydrated skin until I started using Living Nature’s Hydrating Toning Gel. After the first use, I woke up in the morning with the softest skin I think I had ever experienced. Ever since, the Hydrating Toning Gel has become an essential daily staple in my bathroom.“  – Chelsea Evans, Living Nature Marketing Coordinator.

  5. Treat your skin. Each skin type has different necessities; dry or mature skin needs enriching treats, combination (dry and oily areas) skin needs nourishing delights, and oily skin needs balancing infusion. We suggest treating your skin to a face mask 1-2 times per week combined with a daily or every second day skin treat.
