What is ‘Maskne’ and How Do you Treat It?

If you’ve been wearing a mask a lot over the past months, chances are you’ve come across the term ‘maskne’ or mask acne – pesky breakouts which occur as a result of wearing your mask.

Why does this happen?
Wearing a mask for long periods of time can cause moisture and sweat to build up on the skin. This can lead to excess oil production, and increased bacteria. The extra warmth and friction from the mask can push the dirt or oil sitting on the skins surface deeper into the pores, causing a blockage. The tiny hair follicles in your skin become inflamed and irritated, forming pimples.

What can we do to stop it?

1. Limit the bacteria
We recommend you wash your mask often to reduce the amount of bacteria coming into contact with your skin. If you use a disposable mask, ensure it is replaced regularly. A mask made from natural, breathable fabric can also help, as it will allow increased airflow and be less likely to irritate your skin.

2. Cleanse your face properly
We cannot stress this enough – cleansing effectively is one of the most important parts of a good skincare routine! At night, we recommend you double cleanse. First use our Gentle Makeup Remover to soften and remove all traces of makeup.  Next, gently cleanse with our Vitalising Cleanser or Purifying Cleanser to cleanse and refresh skin.

3. Don’t skip the toner!
Toner is important as it regulates your skins natural pH balance. Our Hydrating Toning Gel soothes and balances acne prone and oily skin. We recommend applying this after cleansing, morning and night. The iconic gel formula is crafted with antimicrobial Mānuka Extract and nourishing active Mānuka Honey, which help to keep breakouts at bay.

“After trying countless mask to help with my skin issues and getting no real improvements I was given a box of this charcoal mask from my sister in law. Having never really tried Living Nature products before I wasn't expecting much but can proudly say I have used all ten sachets and will definitely be purchasing more! It leaves my skin feeling super clean, fresh and hydrated with no reactions as I have had with other brands. Thanks Living Nature!” - Laura

“I would just like to say how impressed I am with your "Manuka Honey Gel" - this has been a skin saver for me! For years I have suffered with severe acne and tried most of the pharmaceutical products available including dermatologist lead treatments, however neither were very successful. A year ago I purchased your Manuka honey rescue gel and I was completely blown away but how effective it is! Without a doubt it has been the best product I have EVER used for acne and I will continue to buy it.” - Charlotte
